GROOMING and BATHING
Caring for your Kittens claws and paws
Take care when trimming your kitten’s nails; always ensure that it’s done in a light area to help you see the nerves and blood vessels clearly. The idea is to trim the nail without causing harm or upset to the kitten. You should only ever be taking off the sharp tip of the nail. Your kitten will be used to having its nails trimmed, and this can be demonstrated to you when you get your kitten.
The best way to hold your kitten is within a towel, this keeps your kitten secure, and you can also sit down as well, slowly releasing one paw at a time to trim the nails, and so on.
Sphynx also get a black waxy build up on their nails and this is normal for the breed. This can be cleaned with either using wet cotton buds or a wet cloth.
Trim your kitten’s claws before bathing as this prevents splitting. A bath will remove any existing wax or dirt that has built up within their pads and claws.
Cleaning your Kittens ears
Be very careful in cleaning your kittens ears, there are various solutions available such as cleaning pads and drops. We clean our kitten’s ears with only a warm cloth and we use cotton buds soaked in warm water, and as a golden rule: only to clean as far in as you can see. It is important not to poke cotton buds in your kitten’s ears, but to be gentle in cleaning their ears making cleaning a fun time for both you and your kitten.
You will be amazed at how dirty your kitten’s ears become over the span of a week.
Bathing you Kitten
Every cat’s skin produces oils which traps dirt, and because of the lack of fur it’s easily noticeable on a Sphynx, so your kitten will need a regular bath, it could be once a week or once a fortnight depending.
We bath our kittens at a young age to get them accustomed to it. When we deliver your kitten we will go through the process of bathing with you in detail to ensure the first time is a fun time for both you and your kitten.
We use Groomers Choice, evening primrose shampoo you will find a bottle included in your kitten pack. This shampoo is used by many sphynx owners for its soothing properties being very gentle on the most sensitive skin. This shampoo can be bought at various pet shop outlets.
We bathe all our cats in a baby bath which can be easily placed within your bath, as opposed to a bathing your kitten in the kitchen sink which may possibly still have some traces of cleaning agents or disinfectants, which may act as an irritant to your kittens sensitive skin. Alternatively buying a basin will also do.
- First of all get the baby bath/basin ready in its position; it is best to half fill the baby bath/basin with warm water, as you would a baby. Get everything ready to hand, clean towel, sponge or hand cloth, and shampoo, and finally make sure the room is nice and warm
- Now go get your kitten
- Always hold your kitten with one hand at all times, like a baby this makes him feel secure
- Gently place your kitten into the water, keep talking to your kitten to reassure it that things are ok, lather the shampoo and wash your kitten paying particular attention to under the armpits. Gently clean your kittens face and neck ensuring not to get any soap into its eyes
- Once you have cleaned your kitten, rinse off any soap with clean warm water
- Now wrap your kitten in a soft towel and dry off your kitten ensuring all areas are dry, between toes and under armpits
- Keep him in warm area for a while, so not to give him a chill
Now you can admire your lovely clean baby……..for a while as our cats then run around the house at high speed.
As a daily routine
Ears can be gently cleaned, and if needed a gentle wipe with a suitable baby wipe can be done, we recommend (Pampers Sensitive).
